The wedding rehearsal is going smoothly, and Kurt already knows it's going to be beautiful. There's nothing Kurt loves more than a beautiful wedding.

Well, except maybe the man getting married during it.

It's a hot summer night, and fairy lights combined with the bright moon light up the backyard garden venue of the hotel. Everyone present is dressed nicely, but it's too hot to soil their wedding finery the day before the event.

Kurt resides calmly beside Blaine at the circular table, listening to the matron of honor''s mildly flat voice belt out some song no one's ever heard, and sitting as still as possible to catch the slight breeze in the air. His cool exterior, however, contrasts wildly with his heart, which is banging erratically against his ribcage. It's about that time where he's going to give his toast and sing his song as best man.

It's not the nerves that are pounding him; he's performed plenty of times before. But this is more than just a performance.

It's time to let go. Kurt simply can't go on living like this, hoping for fantasies based on ephemeral hints and looks and touches, existing only for someone else; especially someone who's getting married tomorrow. But he's not letting go without the final word. He's putting it all out there, laying it on the line, wearing his heart on his sleeve like he's always wanted to.

And since Kurt can't bring himself to say it, he's going to sing it.

Finally his cue arrives.

He stands up, champagne glass in hand, and looks down at Blaine. Those eyes are sparkling back up at him with a small smile, breath even under a lavender shirt with the top buttons undone. Kurt has an oddly strong desire to brush at the curls broken loose in the heat on his forehead, but Jess beats him to it, leaning over to affectionately tuck them back into place. This effectively steals Blaine's attention from Kurt, who closes his eyes and lifts his chin. Time to let go, he reminds himself.

"I've known Blaine a long time," he starts, looking back down at his friend with a guarded heart. "And Jess..." he looks into Blaine's fiance's eyes who are so unnervingly like his own, "He's cool too."

The crowd laughs, and Kurt shrugs. "And to be honest I was planning on writing the rest of the speech tonight on a hotel napkin, so I think I'll just skip right to the song, if you don't mind."

The laughter grows with applause as Kurt sets down his glass. He leans down to Blaine's ear.

"Listen," is all he can think to say, and barely catches the intrigued look on his best friend's face before he moves to the stage where the live band is set up.

Into the microphone, he takes a deep breath and smiles even though his knees are shaking. "So this is my song. I had a hard time choosing it, and knowing me I'll probably regret the choice after tonight," he covers up his nervous gulp with a chuckle, "But it's a risk I'm willing to take, for a beautiful song and a beautiful couple."

He chances a glance at Blaine, who's now eyeing him even more curiously, and takes a shuddering breath. This is it. Say it all. He signals the pianist, who begins to play in time to the drums.

Kurt closes his eyes, swaying to the melody and letting it wash over him, giving into all the emotion he's held back for the sake of sanity and well being all these years. This is his one shot, and he's not about to blow it by singing empty words.

To Kurt's credit, the words are anything but empty when they come out.

You are far
When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death and from my heart
Strange that you were strong enough
To even make a start
But you'll never find peace of mind
'Til you listen to your heart

Kurt wrenches his eyes open and directs them at Blaine. He still looks inquisitive, though now he's hinting at awe as he takes in Kurt's voice and the graceful quality it still possesses in performance. He's leaning slightly forward, chin propped up on his hand with a wide grin on his lips.

People...

But he's only looking at one person and desperately needing said person to know this is for and about him and no one else.

You can never change the way they feel
Better let them do just what they will
For they will, if you let them
Steal your heart from you.

Kurt squeezes his eyes against the tears.

People will always make a lover feel a fool

And it's the hardest thing he's ever done, but he finds Blaine's eyes. Nothing but his eyes.

But you knew I loved you
We could have shown them all
We should have seen love through

Blaine isn't smiling anymore.

Fooled me with the tears in your eyes
Covered me with kisses and lies
So goodbye
But please don't take my heart

Kurt can't even hear his voice anymore. He's busy scrutinizing Blaine's face, what he can see by the dim twinkle of light, every furrow of his brow, every twist of his mouth as he listens, processes the words instead of peripherally watching the performance.

You are far
I'm never gonna be your star
I'll pick up the pieces
And mend my heart
Maybe I'll be strong enough
I don't know where to start
But I'll never find peace of mind
While I listen to my heart
Strange that I was wrong enough
To think you'd love me too
You must have been kissing a fool

I said you must have been kissing a fool!

And then he sees it. The almost unnoticeable spark in Blaine's eyes signifying the click, the big realization, the rush of thoughts and emotions and memories that are all meshing together to finally make sense. Kurt can't look anymore as the music builds and he holds the mike for dear life, riding the music so hard it rocks his body, sends shivers down his spine and runs his fingers through his hair, slams his eyes closed.

But remember this
Every other kiss
That you ever give
Long as we both live
When you need the hand of another man
One you really can surrender with
I will wait for you
Like I always do
There's something there
That's can't compare with any other

Kurt can barely see Blaine's face through a haze of moisture; he's completely still, as if frozen, his lips in a strange combination of a bitter smile and a twist of anguish, and his eyebrows are knitted just slightly together. Kurt smiles and shakes his head, letting the tears fall. No point hiding those anymore, while everything else is out in the open too.

You are far
When I could have been your star
You listened to people
Who scared you to death and from my heart
Strange that I was wrong enough
To think you'd love me too
I guess you were kissing a fool
You must have been kissing a fool.

The music fades, and it's like a weight has been lifted off his chest, off his heart, off his entire being. He's weightless, he could be flying if only he had wings, he's so light he could just sing if he hadn't just thrown out entire soul into song five seconds ago. The twinkling lights sparkle a little brighter, the moon shines modestly as if surrendering to Kurt's own glowing light because that's what this feeling is: a glowing spectacle of sharing a long kept secret, of letting out a stoppered dam, of bearing your heart to the world. He doesn't hear the wild applause of those who didn't see past the surface level of spectacular performance, he doesn't feel himself quip a witty line to conclude the performance, he doesn't see Blaine leave his seat at the table.

Because right now, he is Kurt Hummel, living for himself, and that's it. He is free.

A few fairy lights and moonbeams away, Blaine Anderson is slumping to the floor with a burden on his shoulders in the hotel bathroom.

I love this story. Is this going to eventually end up a Klaine match? You have painted a beautiful picture and Kurt is so true to character. The one who holds in his feelings and now it's too late. Please add a chapter soon!

Love it so far! Amazing how I just can't get enough future fic angst for these two. You've done a great job--I can't decide whether I think Blaine's in love with Kurt or not!
