He barely noticed how he bumped into people, how people swore and yelled for him to watch where he was going.
None of it mattered.
Nothing.
When he got to his car, unlocked it and got in before buckling his seatbelt, he started the engine. Then he turned on the radio.
"You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream, the way you turn me on..."
His hand shook badly as it reached for the power button and shut it off, strangled sobs tearing from his throat as everything inside him broke down.It was his fault.
All his fault.
Kurt wasn't speaking to him -- wouldn't take his calls, wouldn't hear him out.
Blaine didn't really blame him -- but he was still hoping there was a way to salvage their relationship.
He cast a sidelong glance at his phone in the front passenger seat as he pulled out of the garage and drove away from Port Columbus, headed back to Lima.
Don't do it -- not after what happened to Quinn -- wait. Kurt's still angry --
Kurt's still angry.
He has a right to be -- I'm a total screw up.
Blaine slammed one hand down on the steering wheel, tears streaming down his face as he pulled into the lane that would allow him to merge onto the freeway.
He hated himself so so much...
It was then that he didn't realize he'd gone into the wrong lane, and straight through the light -- until a car trying to turn slammed into his side of the car.
He lost consciousness when the car skidded across the intersection and slammed into a pole, the front crumpling on impact.
--
"You sure about this?"
"He doesn't have anyone else -- and with what the doctors said..."
"Cooper --"
"Burt, let's face it...our parents don't care. I'm on an indefinite hiatus thanks to lack of auditions and nobody appreciating my talent -- my point is, it's already done. I'm here as long as he needs me." there was a pause. "Kurt say anything?"
"Nope, he just kept crying and saying it was his fault -- that he should have listened. I'll try to get the whole story out of him later. Best I can tell is something happened and they're either fighting or they broke up. Seriously hoping it's the former."
"Yeah...me too."
Cooper sighed and laid his head on the mattress of the hospital bed where his little brother lay.
It had been a week since the accident had happened, and no one was sure if Blaine was going to wake up. He had extensive injuries -- particularly to his back.
According to the doctors who'd spoken with Cooper, it was likely that when he woke up he'd never walk again. That had been hard to hear -- nearly impossible.
"Mmmph." The elder brother was startled out of his thoughts by a muffled groan, coming from the hospital bed.
When he looked up, he saw Blaine looking at him blearily through half open eyes.
"Coop?" he whispered.
"Burt go find his doctor," Cooper choked out. "He's awake." he turned his attention back to his brother. "Hey bud. You're awake."
"Where's Kurt?" Blaine asked softly, "Is he -- Did he come?"
Cooper swallowed back the lump in his throat. He was sure Blaine felt like hell -- and he was already trying to prepare for the moment that the teen figured out he couldn't feel anything from the waist down.
"Coop, where is he? I tried apologizing -- I tried to talk to him -- Oh God." Blaine's eyes went wide with panic. "He hates me -- Kurt hates me --"
"Buddy he doesn't hate you," the elder sibling unconsciously laid a hand on his Blaine's leg. His stomach plummeted when Blaine stared down at his hand in horror.
"I can't feel that. The accident -- I was coming home -- Kurt -- Oh God, I can't feel my legs." he gasped, "It's payback. Kurt hates me. I broke his heart and now I can't -- I can't feel anything."
"Blaine --"
"I broke his heart, Cooper!" the scream (or attempt, as Blaine's voice was pretty hoarse) tore through Blaine's lips, shattering Cooper's heart. "It's my fault! I can't move and I can't feel -- it's all payback -- Oh God I'm just horrible --"
He just realized he can't feel a thing below the waist and all he cares about is Kurt.
"You -- You're not horrible, Blaine," he said, voice cracking as he reached over to cup his brother's cheek with one hand. "We can talk about what happened in New York later, okay? I -- You probably made a mistake -- but --"
Blaine didn't hear him; he was crying too hard.
"Oh buddy," Cooper whispered, leaning over so he could hug the teen. "Let's hear what the doctor says okay? Then we can figure everything else out."
Blaine gulped, tears streaming down his cheeks.
"I'm sorry, Coop. I never meant to hurt him."
"I know." The brunette pressed a kiss to the top of his head, fighting back tears himself. "I know, Blainey. Everything's gonna be okay. We'll get through this."
"P-Promise?"
He nodded.
"I promise."
This is really good. Can't wait for the next chapter, if there is going to be one. ^^
great story!
